LASIK and Traveling

While there is only one specific travel restriction after LASIK, there are a lot of reasons why you need to consider post-surgical travel plans carefully.

That one travel restriction is that you cannot drive for a day, or possibly a few days. In part, this is because you might have to wear a shield over at least one eye for some of this time. But your eyes need to rest and heal and give your visual acuity a chance to stabilize so that you can drive safely.

Other than that, travel after LASIK surgery is considered safe. The other restrictions on travel are due to the need for LASIK follow-up examinations and care. These appointments will be scheduled about one week, one month and three months after your surgery, so, you will need to plan for these. Many people travel quite far for their LASIK surgery, even out of the country. They need to plan either to stay in the area for at least three months, or plan to return for their follow-ups. Many of these people fly to their appointments.

If your travel plans include participating in sporting activities, the restrictions will vary from a couple days to several months, depending upon the level of activity. The more strenuous the activity, the longer the period of restriction. If travel includes visiting relatives, playing with children, and lighter activities, restrictions might last as few as three days.
