LASIK Risks
With the advent of new technologies, such as Wavefront technology, the risk of complications resulting from LASIK surgery is lower than ever–under 1% risk. Most of those are temporary. Those few that remain usually succumb to additional corrective treatments.
The accuracy of Wavefront diagnostics improves the surgeon’s access to information about how to shape the cornea. The accuracy of the laser used to ablate the excess corneal tissue increase the number of patients who experience better than 20/20 vision, and virtually ensure corrections between 20/20 and 20/25, with a small percentage between 20/25 and 20/40.
While the list of LASIK complications can seem a little daunting, bear in mind that these usually clear up as healing progresses. Complications, such as dry-eye from LASIK, are easily treated with eye drops, and usually resolve as the nerves heal. Starbursts, glares and halos also tend to resolve with healing. Under correction and overcorrection is virtually eliminated with the Wavefront technology.
The benefits of LASIK far outweigh the risks, starting with the immediate improvement in sight to clear natural vision. When this improvement eliminates the need for corrective lenses, it also opens up many opportunities to do things that were once restricted.
