IntraLase

Dallas, Texas

The IntraLase technique is one of the latest innovations in laser vision correction surgery. IntraLase is an alternative method for creating the corneal flap, the main surgical step in LASIK vision correction. The IntraLase procedure is sometimes referred to as "all laser", "bladeless", or "iLASIK".

In traditional LASIK, the eye surgeon uses a small, handheld blade called a microkeratome to cut a hinged flap between 100 and 200 microns thick in the cornea. The flap is folded back, and an excimer laser is then used to remove tiny bits of corneal tissue (called "ablation") to reshape the cornea for clearer vision. With all-laser LASIK, both the IntraLase laser and a standard excimer laser create a corneal flap as thin as 100 microns, a real benefit and a safer alternative for people with thinner, flatter corneas who might not qualify for traditional LASIK.

Understanding IntraLase

Complications following LASIK surgery are rare. When they do occur, they are sometimes associated with the oscillating blade used with traditional microkeratomes. These blades are metal and might create uneven edges on the corneal flap. Abnormal corneal surfaces may create visual defects or irregular astigmatism. Additionally, laser-created flaps present a lower risk of scars that can threaten vision.

Using infrared laser energy, IntraLase creates the corneal flap by inserting an exact pattern of tiny spaces that overlap just below the surface of the cornea. Operating at extremely high speeds, the IntraLase laser targets specific tissue without any negative impact to surrounding tissue.

One rare but potential side effect of IntraLase is photophobia, a condition of light sensitivity. This seems to resolve quickly with the use of steroid eyedrops. When compared to the increased safety of the IntraLase procedure, most eye surgeons agree this is a small risk.

If you do not qualify for LASIK, or have had previous corneal surgery and would like to undergo vision correction for nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, IntraLase offers a new and exciting opportunity.
