LASEK

Dallas, Texas

LASEK is an acronym for laser epithelial keratomileusis. Unlike traditional LASIK, where a thin flap is cut into the cornea and then lift, LASEK uses laser energy applied specifically to the outer surface of the eye to reshape and restore vision.

LASEK is most suitable for individuals whose corneas are too thin or too long for LASIK. These conditions make it more difficult to create a corneal flap of appropriate thickness. In the past, LASIK performed on individuals with too thin or too steep corneas led to various complications. The development of LASEK has benefited these individuals by reducing the possibility of complications related to flap creation, and The Carter Eye Center in Dallas, Texas is pleased to bring this advanced innovation to their patients.

The LASEK Procedure

Local anesthesia is used during the LASEK procedure. Dr. Carter first cuts the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium), with a fine blade. Then the eye is covered with a diluted alcohol solution for about 30 seconds to loosen the edges of the epithelium. Any remaining alcohol is sponged off, then a tiny hole is created to lift the edge of the corneal flap, gently folding it back. An excimer laser is used to sculpt the underlying corneal tissue and the epithelial flap is then placed back on the eye.

Recovering from LASEK

During the first day or two after surgery, you may notice your eye feels a bit irritated. Within about 7 days, you will notice your vision has really improved. LASEK requires a somewhat longer healing time and may cause a bit more discomfort than LASIK. However, there is less occurrence of dry eye syndrome with LASEK as compared to LASIK. The edges of the flap heal in about a day. You will wear a bandage contact lens for about four days to protect your eye.

Is LASEK Right for You?

LASEK is not for everyone, but Dr. Carter believes LASEK is a better alternative for those patients who may not do well with LASIK. The outcome of LASEK and other laser vision surgeries depends largely upon the surgeon's experience. In Dallas, Texas and surrounding communities, thousands of patients have chosen the Carter Eye Center specifically because they know they can trust Dr. Carter’s training, experience and high level of expertise.
