Are You a LASIK Candidate?
Fort Worth, Texas
LASIK is a quick, painless, outpatient surgery that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
In nearsightedness, or myopia, the cornea is too steep. This causes light rays to focus in front of the retina, so that close up objects are clear and distant objects are blurry.
In farsightedness, or hyperopia, the cornea is too short. This causes light rays to focus beyond the retina, so that close up objects are blurry and distant objects are clear.
In astigmatism, the curvature of the cornea is irregular, causing various vision irregularities.
Although LASIK is a very popular and safe procedure, with millions of surgeries performed each year in the United States, LASIK is not the right vision correction procedure for everyone.
The best candidates for LASIK:
- Are at least 18 years old
- Have a vision prescription that has not changed for at least one year
- Have had no eye infections or injuries within the past year
- Are not affected by autoimmune disorders such as Sjögren's Syndrome or Lupus
- Have no history of herpes eye infections
- Have no scarring on the cornea
- Understand the risks of LASIK surgery
- Have realistic expectations regarding achievable results
- Are not nursing or pregnant at the time of surgery
- Do not suffer from dry eye syndrome
- Have pupils that do not dilate beyond seven millimeters in the dark
- Are free of certain eye disorders and diseases such as vascular disease
Individuals who do not qualify for LASIK many qualify for other types of laser surgery, such as PRK, LASEK or IntraLase. Choosing a highly experienced LASIK surgeon to evaluate your eye health and determine the best type of vision correction lowers your risk of complications from LASIK surgery and ensures the best outcome.
