Before today’s highly advanced laser vision surgery was conceived, doctors in the 19th century worked to uncover a method for seeing inside the eye. The result was the ophthalmoscope, and a German doctor and physicist named von Helmholtz soon refined the tool and taught others about it. For the first time, doctors could see inside the eye and evaluate diseases like diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

The development of the first laser by researchers at Bell Labs in 1958 revolutionized many industries, including medicine and dentistry and led the way for the formation of a multi-billion-dollar industry today.

Before the discovery of lasers for vision surgery, radial keratotomy was performed using traditional surgical tools. Though rudimentary compared to today’s laser assisted surgery, more than 2 million people opted for radial keratotomy, proving people were eager to correct common vision problems.

In 1978, American doctors uncovered the potential of the excimer laser. Eventually, ophthalmologist Dr. Steven Trokel performed laser vision correction on the cornea using the excimer laser. The potential for laser vision correction progressed rapidly, leading to today’s common Custom LASIK technology known as Wavefront-guided LASIK. As technology has improved, so has the safety and efficacy of LASIK, an acronym for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis.
